JD Set Shenanigans

28th September 2009

So, if you have a short tolerance for long stories, you may want to skip to the 'summary' bit at the end'.  But here's a bit of a run-down of our experiences on The JD Set…

Wednesday night saw us play at The Espy in Melbourne.  I was thrilled - I hadn't played the Gershwin Room before.  We've played the Front Bar plenty of times, but not the Gershwin Room.  And for this run of shows, we weren't too sure what to expect from the crowds.  They were all on School nights, but they were free.  Would anyone turn up?

Did they?  My word, they did.  We heard people got turned away because the room was too full.  So we played to a massive crowd.  And thanks to all of our friends who showed up as well.  Much appreciated.  We met our touring companions, The Blood Poets and The Panics - lovely people, all of them.

The Wednesday night ended with a trip to Sunshine Kebabs on Fitzroy St, where Az and I witnessed a bit of a barney between the shopkeep and a rather inebriated lady who complained she could only see one sweet chilli in her kebab.  And apparently there was no sour cream in there, either.  At 1:00 in the morning, it was hilarious.

And since we were staying in fancy digs, I decided to avail myself of a nice hot bath.

 Fancy digs

It was the following morning that I learnt my first lesson of the tour - shampoo AND conditioner makes my hair bouffant.  VERY bouffant.  If only I had taken a photo of my ridiculous hairstyle.  But I was too busy taking photos of said fancy digs.  I took so many photos of my room, it looked like I was opening a real estate website.

The plane ride to Perth taught me another valuable lesson - any Tom Hanks film post Forrest Gump is a snooze-fest.  Angels & Demons was our in-flight (and I use the word lightly) 'entertainment'.  And Pez tells me there were a number of celebrities on the plane - the boys from NOFX and Kim Beazley.  I saw no one.

Perth is a lovely city.  I call it 'The City of Depth Perception'.  You can never quite tell how far away from the CBD you are because the buildings are small.  From the windows of the Tarago out on the freeway, it looks huge, but once you're in the CBD, it's small.  When you're used to the Melbourne skyline, it takes some adjusting.

Perth from Steve's Balcony

We got to the hotel where I promptly took more photos of my room.  I also ironed a shirt.  I also located and pocketed the sewing kit.  You just never know when they'll come in handy.

 The Capitol Crowd

Thursday night, we played at The Capitol Club.  The Perth crowd got into it, too.  The line snaked its way down the pavement, well before opening.  I again got to watch The Panics' full set.  Plus, in between, we hung out in the bowels of the club, in the tastefully-decorated band room with The Blood Poets.

Tastefully-decorated bandroom

I learned that day that my namesake will forever haunt me - the street press picked up on my name being Steve Martin, so titled their article on the band '3 Amigos'.  I love it.  I can't wait till we get an army of seamstresses to sew together a truckload of Mariachi suits for a photoshoot.

Anyone who's been to Perth knows that everything shuts early.  So to find a 24 hour food joint called Fast Eddy's post-gig was a godsend.  However, the name was not accurate.  They weren't too fast, and I'm not sure that any of the employees were named Eddy.  But they made a mean chicken burger.

Fast Eddy's. An oasis in the night.

Friday saw us driving to Busselton.  3 hours' worth.  I just remembered I changed all of the settings on Pez's GPS.  Sorry, Pez.  But we arrived at our accommodation and got upgraded to the Presidential Suite.  A whole house to ourselves!  Gold.

I think we learned that it will be a long time before we get accommodated in such luxury on tour again.  Just the week before, we camped in mud at Blueprint.  The JD Set was a complete contrast.

The Friday night, we played at the Esplanade Hotel.  In Melbourne, we call our Esplanade hotel 'The Espy'.  In Busselton, they call their Esplanade hotel 'The Narde'.  Crazy!  The crowd was smaller on Friday, but then, so was the room.  And it was great to see both bands play in that smaller environment.

Saturday, we had grand plans of waking early and driving to the airport so that we could watch the Grand Final.  That didn't happen.  We arrived around half-time, then spent the third quarter checking in.  By the time we found a TV, there were about 2 minutes left in the game.

The in-flight program included an episode of 30 Rock and the not-too-shabby The Young Victoria.  And then we landed.  I fought my way home on the Airport Shuttle, through the Grand Final/NRL Semi final crowds.  Then I slept.

So, all-in-all, it was a FANTASTIC experience.  There's a bunch of people we'd like to thank…

  • JD for starting the whole initiative.
  • You people out there for voting for us to get on the bill.
  • Jae, Miles, Paul, Drew and Jules from The Panics - true gentlemen.
  • Kel (in WA) and George (at The Espy) - for mixing us.  You guys did great work.
  • Tom, Todd, Bec, Jake and Jason from The Blood Poets - you're a great bunch of cats.
  • Nathaniel and Neil (Tour Managers) - more rock than all of us put together, but we would have been lost without them.
  • Western Australian Taxi Drivers
  • All the PA and Lighting guys

and,

  • Inebriated lady at Sunshine Kebabs

Jae from The Panics, Az and Pez

SUMMARY:

We had a FANTASTIC time.  We really appreciate the assistance everyone gave us during the run and wish that it didn't have to end.  We played some of the best shows we ever have and met some wonderful people.  We came home swearing like sailors.

Peace out,

Matheson at a town near you!

6 June 2009

Over the next couple of months, we're going to be busy little beavers.  We've got a score of shows across regional Victoria.  Most of these will be  in support of Matt Joe Gow & The Dead Leaves.  Plus, we're making a sojourn to Adelaide.

Personally, I can't wait.  I've never been to Adelaide.

I haven't been to Mildura since I was in Grade 1!  All I remember is visiting an orange orchard and some Paddle Steamers.

Last time I went to Shepparton, I got a punctured tyre and had to replace two tyres because the dude at the tyre shop wouldn't let me drive away with bald tyres.

And I haven't been to Bendigo since, oooh, Easter this year!

In addition to all this, we'll be playing at the inaugural Blueprint Festival, a bit outside of Aararat in September.  There's already a huge lineup for Blueprint, with more to be announced.  Its one of the first festivals of the season, too.  Get involved!

So we'll be checking the tyre pressures on the Volvo, filling the windshield-washer reservoir and hitting a town near you!  Check our dates on MyspaceFacebook, and most importantly. on this site!

See you on the road,

Steve

Where do you weigh a whale?

3 May 2009

..we'll get to that later.

We’ve been to sunny/tropically rainy Queensland this weekend.  Two shows in all.  One at The Sands Tavern in Maroochydore, and one at the stunningly beautiful Woodfordia site.  It’s the place where the Woodford Folk Festival is held every year (around Christmas).  This weekend was their Planting weekend, where a bunch of committed ticket holders paid for the privilege of planting trees to help regenerate the site.  It’s a marvelous idea.

We played as the entertainment for the Saturday night, along with fellow Bombers supporter, Glenn Richards (of Augie March fame), and Melbourne lads Bonjah.  We met lots of wonderful people and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.  We’d like to thank (in no particular order) Bill, Jan, Katie, Jade, Avalon, Alice, Dillon, Malcolm, Jeff, Ross, Rod Quantock, Glenn, Carly, Sarah, Scott, Alex, and anyone else we may have forgotten for making us feel so welcome, showing us the sights, finding us towels, and making us laugh, think and chant for football teams.

There was, however, an small incident with a rogue wheelie bin and a hire car, but we came out of that OK.  In the title fight of Matheson Vs Wheelie bin, Matheson came out on top.  We're winners.

As we fly back into Victoria, we’re looking to the week ahead – Tuesday night at Northcote Social Club with The Underminers Duo and Epicure, then Saturday at the Curtin Band Room in Calrton with Custom Kings.

So, with one hectic week behind us and another one about to commence, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on what we’ve learnt.  I learned never to trust a GPS unit.  Aaron learned to pack more paracetamol, and Mark learned about Dongas (look it up - its not rude).  Plus, thanks to Ross, our trusty bus driver, we all learned where to weigh a whale.  You’ve probably heard it before, but it was news to us – you weigh a whale at a Whale Weigh Station!  Ba-hahahahaha.  Oh, Ross.  Thanks for the memes.

Check out some of the photos by clicking here.

See you at a show soon

Steve
